First Impression & Design

If you’ve seen regular-sized projectors before, you’ll be thrilled to see the LG PF50KA. The projector’s casing looks very compact, and the design seems friendly due to its squared body with rounded edges.

LG is known to produce minimalistic-looking projectors, and the LG PF50KA is no exception to the brand’s design philosophy.

LG PF50KA - best battery powered projector

The LG PF50KA design looks very similar to Anker’s Nebula Solar Portable projector. However, the LG PF50KA was launched a couple of years before the Anker Nebula Solar Portable.

Talking about its design, the LG PF50KA features a projection lens on the front. Above the projection lens, you can see a focus knob to fine-tune the projection’s focus. The projector top also features a power button and 4 directional buttons right next to the focus knob.

The left and the right sides feature perforations for heat dissipation and also hosts the stereo speakers. Unfortunately, the built-in speakers are very weak, and it’s better to invest in a wireless speaker system.

The projector’s back features connectivity options, and LG has been very generous in this department. Most portable projectors come with limited wired connectivity options; however, that’s not the case with the LG PF50KA.

LG PF50KA - best compact projector under $600

You get 2x HDMI ports with ARC support, TV antenna port, USB Type-A port, USB Type-C port, LAN port, and a headphone jack. The back also features an On/Off switch and DC in port for powering this projector.

Talking about wireless connectivity options, the LG PF50KA comes with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

The projector also features a built-in battery to use anytime. LG has mentioned the battery size or specifications. However, the battery is rated to power the projector for up to 2.5 hours on a full charge.

Built Quality & Performance

Being a portable projector, it is important to question how well the projector is built, right? However, to our surprise, the LG PF50KA is very well built and can last many years if used properly.

This projector can take day-to-day beating and handle rough usage. However, a slight fall from a coffee table or waist height might be enough to damage this projector permanently. It’s because the projector features multiple lenses and mirrors on the inside to generate a projection. Hence a small crack in the projection unit can make this projector unusable.

LG PF50KA - best compact projector from LG

Now that we’ve talked about the projector’s design and built quality, let’s move on to its performance, shall we?

Along with being compact and portable, the LG PF50KA is also a smart projector. This projector comes with a built-in LG Smart TV user interface; thus, you can enjoy smart TV-like features on this tiny projector. It can connect to your home Wi-Fi router, and you can access a plethora of apps and games through the LG Smart TV UI.

Talking about specifics, the LG PF50KA sports 1920 x 1080p Full HD resolution; hence you get the best picture quality from this teeny-tiny projector. In addition, this projector uses single-chip DLP projection technology and produces up to 600 ANSI lumens brightness.

600 ANSI lumens is ideal for using this projector in a dim room to enjoy excellent projection quality. Although, the projection will look washed out if using this projector during the daytime or in a bright room. An LED bulb handles the lighting, and the LED bulb is rated to last up to 30,000 hours.

You also get Bluetooth connectivity; thus, you can connect plenty of Bluetooth-compatible devices. However, I’d recommend getting a dedicated Bluetooth speaker to use alongside this projector. The built-in 2x 1W stereo speakers are weak and offer mediocre sound quality; hence, a dedicated Bluetooth speaker will offer better sound quality for everyday usage.

LG PF50KA comes with plenty of connectivity options

While the projector offers a manual knob to adjust the focus; however, the LG PF50KA can automatically do horizontal and vertical keystone correction for you. Thus, you do not need to figure out the correct keystone settings every time you set this projector at a new place.

The LG PF50KA can produce up to a 100-inch screen from a distance of just under 10 feet. However, in my usage, I felt the sweet spot is between 40-65 inches. It’s because you get an excellent balance between color, brightness, contrast, and projection lighting.

Important Features & Functions

  • Built-in LG Smart TV UI: With Smart TV-like features enabled on the LG PF50KA, you do not need to connect this projector to an HDMI device to use this projector. With the LG Smart TV UI, you can access apps like Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video and watch your favorite content without any issues.

  • Automatic Keystone Adjustment: Since the LG PF50KA is a portable projector, you can use this projector anywhere you want. However, in this case, manual keystone adjustment can get tedious. Hence, the inclusion of automatic keystone adjustment allows you to get a perfect rectangle projection even with random placement.

  • Multiple connectivity options: Many portable and battery-powered projectors come with very few connectivity options. However, that’s not the case with the LG PF50KA. This projector comes with plenty of connectivity options, including 2x HDMI ports, a LAN port, and a TV antenna port.

Conclusion

Compared to other battery-powered projectors within a similar price range like the Kodak Luma 450 and Anker Nebula Solar Portable, the LG PF50KA offers higher brightness, better performance, and a lightweight design.

Moreover, it also comes with plenty of connectivity options that improve its practical application. Finally, it has the highest brightness output of 600 lumens when compared to its competitors. Thus you do not need a completely dark room to use this projector comfortably.

Hence, if you want a portable and compact projector that offers the best specifications and features, you wouldn’t go wrong with the LG PF50KA.
